Stu Marvin grew up in Oreland, PA, graduating from Upper Dublin High School in 1973 where he was a three-sport athlete. During his time at UDHS he was a three-year qualifier at the PIAA State Swimming Championships, becoming a three-time All-State performer by placing 2nd in the 50 Freestyle and 3rd 400 Freestyle Relay in 1973, and 3rd in the 400 Freestyle Relay in 1972. He was named a NISCA Honorable Mention High School All-American in 1973.
Stu went on to Bloomsburg State College, where we won five Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championships and established seven conference records. He qualified for the NCAA Championships all four years, becoming an 11-time All-American. For his efforts he was named the BSC Outstanding Senior Male Athlete of the Year in 1978 and was a two-time winner of the Outstanding Underclass Male Athlete of the Year in 1975 and 1977.
Upon graduation, Stu moved to Fort Lauderdale, FL, where he joined the Fort Lauderdale Beach Patrol, rising to the rank of Lieutenant. In 1988, he was named manager of the Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Center at the International Swimming Hall of Fame. Over the next 16 years, he hosted and conducted 63 national and international championships in the sports of swimming, diving, water polo and synchronized swimming. He was also involved with over 400 state, regional, and local aquatic events, including four Florida State High School Swimming and Diving championships.
During his years in Florida, Stu also continued his competitive swimming career, winning two FINA World Masters Championships, 26 US National Masters championships and 9 YMCA National Masters championships. He set two FINA Masters world records, sixteen US Masters national records, and six YMCA Masters National Records. He was also named a US Masters All-American nine times.
In 2008, Stu returned to Pennsylvania to take the head coaching position of the Bloomsburg University Swimming Teams. Over his fifteen- year career, the BU men achieved their first undefeated season in program history in 2017, and their first conference championship in program history in 2021. Between the women’s and men’s programs, Stu produced 19 All-Americans, 41 Conference Champions and 109 All-Conference Awards. Two swimmers were named Conference Swimmer of the Year, three as Conference Freshman of the Year, and two as Conference Scholar Athlete of the Year. His women received eight Bloomsburg University Athlete of the Year honors, while his men received a total of 14. During his coaching career, Stu was named Conference Coach of the Year six times.
Stu is currently a member of five halls of fame: Upper Dublin High School Athletic Hall of Fame, Bloomsburg University Athletic Hall of Fame, Pennsylvania Aquatic Hall of Fame, Broward County Florida Sports Hall of Fame, and the Florida Gold Coast Masters Hall of Fame.
