About This Inductee

Ed “Big Daddy” While was born in Shenandoah, PA. He was a 1951 graduate of J.W. Cooper High School, now Shenandoah High School. He played four years of football, basketball and baseball earning seven letters. He went on to Mansfield State College earning his B.S. in Education. He played football and basketball for four years and baseball for two years earning five letters. He earned his Masters degree at Bucknell University and extensive credits at the University of Scranton. He served four years in the US. Navy during the Korean Conflict where he reached the rank of petty officer 3rd class. Ed was an assistant football coach (backfield) at Tunkhannock H.S. for l6 years where he coached numbers of great backs. He then went into administration and served as administrative assistant for 18 years. Other extra-curricular activities were 20 years of playing coaching slow-pitch softball where he had numerous championship teams. Community services were also a big part of his career including President of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Elks, Amvets, P.S.A.R. and charter member of the Downtown W.B. Athletic Club. He also served as president of the Penn Can basketball league and was commissioner of the slow-pitch softball leagues in Tunkhannock. He served as social director of Tunkhannock Area Schools for over 30 years. Ed was active as a PIAA official in basketball and football over 42 years. He retired from teaching with 34 years of service. Ed passed away at the age of 90, on January 16, 2023.
