Ed graduated from Newport High School in 1936, and was a member of both state and regional basketball teams. Ed became the head coach of Northwest High School in Shickshinny. Over three decades, he carved his place into state basketball history finishing as one of Pennsylvania’s top ten high school basketball coaches. His 748 – 195 record boasts a .792 winning percentage. His state championship teams of 1982-83 and 1983-84 won 65 games and lost only 1, over those two seasons. Over 34 seasons, Coach Gayeski’s teams posted 20 win seasons, 24 times. In addition, Northwest basketball history includes 13 league championships, 14 tournament titles, 14 district titles, 8 final eight PIAA eastern finals appearances and back to back PIAA State Class A basketball championships in 1982-83 and 1983-84.
