About This Inductee

Dr. Sandra Bloomberg is perhaps the greatest female athlete ever to play at Wilkes University. Participating in basketball and field hockey (the only two varsity sports for women at the time), Sandy was a seven letter winner. Three times she was named Wilkes Female Athlete of the Year, was MVP of basketball team, and defensive MVP on the field hockey team. In 1971, Wilkes retired Sandy’s number 44 in both basketball and field hockey in honor of her accomplishments in both sports. Following graduation, Sandy was appointed assistant professional instructor in Health and Physical Education at Wilkes University. She established the first women’s intercollegiate tennis team and coached them to a regional championship. She also established a college-wide intramural program. She coached the women’s basketball team to its best season in the history of the college, winning 12 games in 1978. Additionally, Sandy coached the women’s intercollegiate field hockey team. Sandy went on to earn her Masters Degree at New York University and her Ph.D. in Health Sciences at the University of Utah. Since 1998 Sandy has been the Academic Dean at the College of Professional Studies at New Jersey City University.
