Dana Balum

About This Inductee

Dana Balum is a 1967 graduate of Muncy High School where he was a four-year letterman in wrestling. He compiled a record of 65-10-2 in high school. He was a two-time District IV champion and a Northeast Regional runner-up as a junior. In his senior year, he won the regional title and was a PIAA State runner-up at 133 lbs. Upon graduation, he attended Penn State University, where he earned three varsity letters with a record of 32-17-4. Dana was two-time E.I.W.A. runner-up. He graduated from Penn State in 1971 with a B.S. Degree in Health and Physical Education. In 1972, Dana assumed the head coaching duties at James M. Coughlin High School in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. In the following 27 seasons, his teams have compiled a 365-132-1 record with 24 winning seasons, including one undefeated season. Ten of his teams have been District 2 AAA champions and seven teams have been Wyoming Valley Conference champions. Over a span of four years, his teams had a streak of 36 consecutive league victories. He has produced 54 District 2 champs, five of which were named Outstanding Wrestlers at Districts, also six Northeast AAA Regional champions and six AAA state place winners. Dana was selected nine times as District 2 Coach of the Year, and nominated as many times for State Coach of the Year. Several outstanding awards Dana has won include Penn State Wrestling Outstanding Alumnus Award in 1987; Referees W.V.C. Sportsmanship Award four times; the Killer Bees A.C. 1990 Board of Governors Award; and The Scholastic Coach Magazine Wrestling Coach Gold Award in 1989. Dana is a member of the Muncy High School Hall of Fame and the Pennsylvania State Wrestling Hall of Fame. Dana resides in Mountaintop, Pa., with his wife Barbara, daughter Kelly and son Kyle. He continues to coach wrestling and teach health and physical education at Coughlin High School.
