Gallagher was an outstanding football star at St. Johns High School where he gained All-Scholastic honors as a lineman. He later earned All American honorable mention at St. Thomas College (University of Scranton), where he was voted MVP in 1932. Gallagher taught at Pittston Area and served as football and basketball coach at Pittston and St. John High Schools.
