About This Inductee

WJ. Romanowski, Avoca, was a star football player at Avoca High School from 1932-36, and also played baseball and track. The fullback was all-scholastic honorable mention in 1934, and first-team Pittston area and third-team Wyoming Valley all-scholastic in 1935. From 1936-39, Romanowski played for Villanova College. After graduation, he worked as an engineer in the New York Shipbuilding Corporation, and played one year on its football team. He played semi-pro foot-ball for the Magnolia Club from 1942-44. In 1948, Romanowski began a long officiating career. He was a PIAA football official from 1948-1986, and also worked basketball games and track meets. He was the District 2 PIAA representative from 1961-81 in all high school sports. Romanowski’s officiating wasn’t limited to high school sports. From 1950-74, he officiated college football, including the annual Army-Navy game.
