Bill started playing tennis in 7th grade. In his teens, he played on the Middle States Junior Davis Cup Team. He played three years for Norristown High School, one year at The Hill School and four years at Penn State University (1952-1955), where he was number one singles player and captain his senior year. In 1955, he was the Montgomery County Tennis Singles Champion. During his time in the military at Fort Benning, Georgia and Fort Lewis, Washington (1956-1957), he played tennis in the Army and was the singles runner-up in the 6th Army tournament held in Dugway, Utah (1956). Bill and his family moved to Luzerne County in 1963 and have resided in the area for over 50 years. Bill has been the Wyoming Valley Closed tournament champion in Singles and Doubles numerous times. As a 30 year member of the Wyoming Valley Swim and Tennis Club, he often held the Club Men’s Singles & Doubles Championship Titles. In 2006, he played in the Men’s National and International 75 & under Grass Court Championships at the Philadelphia Cricket Club. In 1979, Bill opened his real estate office in Mountain Top and retired at age 69. He and his wife, Sue, who celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary next month, still reside in Mountain Top and are the proud parents of three children: Dani Durham and husband Ken, Charlotte, NC; Shelly Onorato and husband Dan, Pittsburgh; and Bill III and Irene Ziegler, Mountain Top. They have ten grandchildren: Kate Onorato (24) – 3rd year medical student at The Commonwealth Medical College; Alex Durham (24) – Jr. Broker at Jones, Lang, Lasalle, Austin, TX; David Durham (24) – Globus Medical, Princeton; NJ; Emily Onorato (21) – Senior at Penn State; Danny Onorato (18) – Freshman at Penn State; Jonathan Durham (17) – Senior at Charlotte Christian; Will Ziegler (14) – Freshman at Wyoming Seminary; Ben Ziegler (11), Catherine Ziegler (10); Hannah Ziegler (8) – Fairview Elementary.
