Mike covered The Sunday Independent sports beat for 40 years. He is considered as the country’s “most prolific boxing writers.” It is understandable boxing was Mike’s first love. He conceived the practice of honoring the area’s scholastic stars each year, citing the best preformers. This brain child of Mike’s made its initial appearance in the 1922 Sunday Independent edition. A licensed Pennsylvania boxing commission judge, he was one of the judges casting his vote to crown Gene Tierney Champ over Jack Dempsey in the historic bout on September 23, 1926 at Municipal Stadium, Philadelphia.
