Matthew graduated from Coughlin High School in 1997, having earned 6 letters in basketball and football. He was a member of Wyoming Valley Conference’s Division I All Star basketball team (honorable mention) and played in the 1997 WVC All Star Classic. He was part of Coughlin High School’s 1994, 1995 and 1996 District II AAAA championship football teams. He was honorable mention in 1995 on the Coaches Division I All Star Team, named to the Citizens’ Voice All Conference Team and Division I Offensive First Team and Times Leader Division I WVC All Star Team in 1996. He was also named to the AP Class (3A-4A) All State-second team defense. He participated in the 1997 WVC UNICO All Star Classic and the 40^th Classic Big 33 game team. Moving on to Virginia Tech, Matt earned 4 letters in football, participating in the 1998 Music City Bowl, 2000 Nokia Sugar Bowl National Championship Game (finishing #2), and the 2001 and 2002 Toyota Gator Bowls. In 1999 Virginia Tech won the Big East Championship. Matt earned the Master Link Award in 1999 for his Boston College game play and also the Chain Gang Award in 1999 and 2001. In 2001 he won the Spring Season-Frank O Mosley Award as Top Offensive Hustler. He was named Offensive Player of the Game in 2001 against Western Michigan and was voted Outstanding Offensive Lineman that year. Presently, Matt is teaching Health and Physical Education at the Wyoming Valley West School District and is their assistant football defensive line coach. He is the son of Patricia and Leonard Wincek. He also has a sister Amy, a teacher in Maryland.
