About This Inductee

At Hazleton Area High School (HAHS). Joy was a four-letter winner in basketball, softball, and volleyball. In basketball, Gallagher was three lime First Team Wyoming Valley Conference (WVC) all-star and two-time WVC Player of the Year. Joy finished her career at HAHS with 1,413 total points and was named MVP of the WVC senior all-star game and selected to participate in the PA East-West all star game in Pittsburgh, PA. In softball, Gallagher was a four time First Team all-star and in her senior year, was MVP of the WVC and WVC senior all-star game. In volleyball, Gallagher was a two-time selection to the WVC All-Star Team. Joy was named the Reading Eagle Lower Anthracite Female Athlete of the Year and also won the prestigious Scotty Roman Award in 2002 for outstanding athlete, male or female, in the Hazleton Area. Joy was awarded a full athletic scholarship and played basketball at Wagner College from 2002 to 2006. She is a member of Wagner’s 1,000 point club ( 1,158) and was named captain her senior year. As a sophomore, she set the school’s single game three point record (11) against Boston University, leading the NCAA Division 1 ranks with 3.5 three-point field goals made per game while breaking the schools single-season record with 99 three-point field goals for the season. She holds the school career record for career three-point field goals made at 240. Joy was a Second Team All-District-1 Academic All-American her junior year & First Team Academic All-American District-1 her senior year. Joy was named the 2006 Northeast Conference (NEC) Student Athlete of the Year and received a $7,500.00 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, the first recipient of this prestigious award in Wagner College history. Joy walked onto the softball team in her senior year, recording an NEC season high 21 game hitting streak while batting 0.333 and garnered second team All-NEC accolades. Joy was selected to the Academic All-American softball team. In 2012, Gallagher was inducted into Hazleton Area Sports Hall of Fame. Joy earned a BS in Chemistry (magna cum laude) and MBA in Management at Wagner College; she earned a Ph.D. in Chemistry at Pennsylvania State University in 2013. Joy is a Global Segment Leader at Dow and resides in Eagleville, PA with her husband. Jay Stephens, Ph.D.
