Joe DeMelfi is a native of Berwick, Pennsylvania. While attending the Berwick schools, he was All-State Selection as a football player, and named Most Valuable Player in the Big 33 Game. He graduated in 1961. DeMelfi attended the University of Tennessee from 1961 to 1962. He graduated from Delta State University, Cleveland, MS, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education in 1966, and a Masters Degree in Education in 1973. Joe taught health and physical education at Mansfield University in 1975, and was also the assistant football coach. From 1976 to 1989 he was the assistant Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid, and the assistant football coach at Bloomsburg University. In 1990 he went to Wilkes University where he was the assistant Dean of Admissions and the head football coach until 1995. In 1993, Wilkes won the Middle Atlantic Conference for the first time in twenty years. Wilkes also played in the NCAA Division III National Playoffs for the first time in the school’s history. Wilkes’ record under DeMelfi’s coaching was 10-1. In 1994, they won the Freedom League Title, ECAC Southeast Championship with a record of 9-2. Joe DeMelfi was named the 1993 Freedom League, Middle Atlantic Conference Coach of the Year; the American Football Coaches Association, Region 2, Coach of the Year; and Josten’s, National Division III, Coach of the Year. In 1994, he was named the Freedom League’s Coach of the Year.
