Gretchen graduated from Tunkhannock Area High School in 1992. From 1989 through 1992, she threw the discus and javelin for Tunkhannock Girls Track and Field team. During those years, the team was undefeated with 69 wins. Gretchen was instrumental in the team’s Wyoming Valley Championship and District II AAA Championship. She broke the District II AAA record in 1992. She is the holder of the “old” javelin record (138’1″) for PIAA District II (May 1992 to present). Gretchen won the state silver medal in 1991 and the state gold medal in 1992 at the PIAA meets at Shippensburg University. Gretchen is the only individual state gold medalist in Tunkhannock High School’s history. She was also a contributing member of the girls’ basketball team in 1989-1990 when they won the PIAA District II Championship. Gretchen was on the University of Tennessee (Knoxville) Track and Field team from 1992 to 1993. At the NCAA Southeastern Conference T&F Championship in 1993, Gretchen placed 6th in the javelin throw. She earned a B.S. from Southwestern University, Texas. She was one of the assistant coaches for the men and women throwers at the University of the Redlands in California in 1998. In 2001, she became a USA T&F Level 1 certified coach. She was awarded the Walter Tewksbury Award also in 2001. While teaching at Montrose Junior High School in Pennsylvania, Gretchen was the Tunkannock Area High School Assistant Girls’ T&F coach in 2003-2004.
