Frank (Zotch) Sorochak was born and raised in Edwardsville, PA. He was a 1934 graduate of Edwardsville High School, where he participated in football and basketball. His ambition was to go to college and play basketball. He was recruited by Bloomsburg State Teachers College; unfortunately, his father and stepfather were killed working in the mines and his mother had also passed away. Being the oldest of 5 children, he gave up his chance to go to college to go to work in the mines to keep his family together. His interest in sports never waned however, he decided to take up officiating high school football and basketball. Under the guidance of Zip Bryant, Kenny Smith, Penn Williams, Dinny and Mike Noonan and other officials, he became one of the elite officials in the Valley. He was always among the top three officials requested. He officiated football for 27 years, basketball for 25, officiating many district championship games and interdistrict playoff games. Frank retired from officiating in 1963. He passed away on June 21, 1981. He is survived by his wife Mary, son Bob, daughter-in-law Ann Marie, and grandchildren, Susan and Bob, Jr. His son Frank, Jr., recently passed away.
