About This Inductee

‘Ernie’ graduated from Lebanon High School in 1962. He played four years of football. He went on to Mansfield State College where he graduated in 1967. The years he has dedicated to teaching and coaching swimming, diving and instructor-training will never be matched. He coached at Lebanon VMCA for seven years. He coached age group swimming at Richland and Towanda for 10 years. He then coached at Tunkhannock for 27 years. He compiled a record of 175 w ins and 98 losses. His teams were always well disciplined and expertly trained. He won the District II championship and Coach of the Year award in 1996. He won the Wyoming Valley championship in 1997 when his team went undefeated. Ernie has coached numerous top state finishers (All-State) District IIAA and AAA champions and District IV champions. His “forte” may be the great services he has performed with young swimmers. He has been and still is the head-swimming instructor for the Red Cross for 43 years and counting. The number of beginners he has taught and supervised is too many to mention. He has been the American Red Cross trainer of instructors for the past 19 years. Ernie has retired from teaching and coaching after 35 years and resides with his wife Rose in Eaton Twp., Tunkhannock. They have four children, Todd and Eric Shartle, Rich Hiduk and Lisa Hughes.
