Wilkes-Barre
When you think of basketball in the Wilkes-Barre area, one name comes to mind — Eddie White. White enjoyed a highly successful 42-year ca-reer, coaching in the Penn-State, New York-Penn and American leagues and with the Bullets in the NBA. His list of accomplishments is long. He captured 34 championships at various levels and his teams were runners-up four times. In 1948, he led the Wilkes-Barre Barons into the 10th annual World Basketball Championships in Chicago. The Barons lost to the eventual tourna-ment champion Minneapolis Lakers, who were led by the great George Mikan. White is currently a member of the Wilkes-Barre city council.
