About This Inductee

As a youngster Don participated in football, basketball and baseball. At G.A.R. Memorial High School in Wilkes-Barre, he lettered as a sophomore in track; lettered and started as a junior in football (quarterback), basketball (guard) and track (discus, 440 and low hurdles). As a senior, in football he set several passing records, including completing 63% of passes. He was All-Scholastic, second team, and was recognized as the best passer in the Wyoming Valley Conference. He was co-award winner of the Athlete, Scholar, and Gentleman Award. At Taft Prep School, Watertown, Connecticut, Don led the football team in passing and victories, the basketball team in scoring and lettered in track. At the University of Pennsylvania he starred in football three years, playing wingback and defensive halfback. As a senior he started as tailback, leading the team in passing and key victories. He was voted by his teammates as MVP and winner of the Edgar M. Church Award as the member who contributed most to the team. In August, 2002, Don was nominated by Coach John Stiegman, head coach at the University of Penn and was awarded by the All-American Football Foundation the “Unsung Hero” Award of the 1963 University of Penn football team. Don graduated from the Wharton School (University of Pennsylvania) in 1966 and is president of E. D. Challis Associates (marketing consultants). He is the son of Elizabeth and the late Evand Challis.
