Strauss attended Fairview High School in Mountaintop where he starred in basketball, baseball and gymnastics. He got his start in boxing by accident, then went on to fight 127 amateur and 89 professional bouts in a 15 year career. As a pro he rolled up a 71¬15-3 record. Strauss was the national AAU champion in 1937 in the 132-pound weight division.
