About This Inductee

Also known as “GQ”, Gentleman Qadry Ismail has established himself as one of the most versatile athletes from Northeastern Pennsylvania, to ever don a uniform. In the formative years when a young man is searching for who he is, his family unit as it was perceived, was destined to pull up roots and make their way to Wilkes-Barre.  After the tragic loss of his father Ibrahim, Qadry and his brothers Raghib and Sulaiman, along with their mother Fat’ma knew that change was imminent. The decision was made to join their paternal grandmother Laura Bauknight. The Newark, New Jersey living experience grew more menacing.  The boys found their way to Meyers High School, where they were able to be mentored by legendary football coach Mickey Gorham.

Upon his arrival, Qadry ‘s transformation would be evident, but his talents were latent and had to be established. As for the classroom, he would cultivate an academic work-ethic through the guidance and influence of educators like Mrs. Margarite Latinski. He sought the council of teachers like her and was able to establish himself academically.  His football ability was steady and consistent. But it was his track exploits that set him apart from the pack. He established himself as a force in hurdling and the relays.  Varsity Track and Field Coach James “Boss” Cross made the decision to bring Qadry up from the JV team as a freshman, to compete at the Varsity level.

Twelve district titles and six state championships later, he was declared the number one schoolboy hurdler in the United States by the prestigious Track & Field News. His athletic ability showcased physical talent, and his adaptability between sports projected him to levels beyond compare. After heading to Syracuse on a football scholarship, he was able to have his name placed, as the first two-sport All-American at Syracuse since the legendary Jim Brown in 1967. Qadry showed his versatility as both a wide receiver and kick returner which earned him consensus All-American honors, and as a finalist for the Heisman Trophy.

Five Bowl game victories later, the “Missile” would be set to launch toward his target of professional football. But the trajectory of his collegiate career would not be complete without the overwhelming success he would display on the track. He was a dynamic force in the competitive world of 55M and 110 IM hurdles. This record setting two-time All-American, would eventually capture the IC4A and Big East Championships to complete this ultra-successful athletic collegiate experience.   Now the wait for the call. Qadry Ismail had established himself, as an elusive competitor on the track, and football fields. The there was now one inescapable road to complete this journey, and it was NFL Draft Day. His time had arrived, and his number was called. “In the second round, with overall pick number 52, the Minnesota Vikings select,

Qadry Ismail from Syracuse University.” Dreams come true. With the successes that he and the “Rocket” had shared together, their professional goals would now parallel each other.

The “Missile” would embark on an NFL career that would take him from the Vikings, and watch him land in New Orleans, Miami, and Indianapolis. The most significant impact would be with the Baltimore Ravens.  Here he would achieve what only a few Northeastern Pennsylvania football athletes could hang a career on, a chance to compete in the Super Bowl.  Not only would he play and contribute to this ultimate victory over the New York Giants in number 35, but he would come home and be able to share this with his community of family and friends.

Hall of Fame inductions are often perceived as hollow and without true meaning. But for Qadry Ismail, the Pennsylvania Track and Field Coaches Association allowed him to realize that his place in history is confirmed. The Luzerne County Sports Hall of Fame has also chosen to establish his place, alongside of his brother, and tell him that making Wilkes-Barre his home, would allow him to come full circle.
