Merle graduated from West Pittston High School where he was a two-year starter on the football team. Football team captain, eh was also class president. He was named First Team West Side Conference at quarterback. He was also a two-year starter on the basketball team and ran track, winning a bronze medal in javelin his senior year. He went on to star at quarterback at Lafayette College. He obtained his Master’s degree from Temple University. Merle coached football at West Pittston High School for 6 years (head coach), Wyoming Area one year (assistant coach), Spring-Ford 11 years (head coach); Coatesville three years (assistant coach) and Ursinus College 13 years (defensive coordinator). His team won two Ches-Mont championships (1969 and 1973) and he was named Coach of the Year twice at Spring-Ford. He won one championship at Coatsville in 1981 and Ursinus College won the Continental Conference championship in 1996. He retired in 1994 after 34 years of teaching. HE sells real estate for Glocker Real Estate. Merle and his wife Alberta reside in Royersford PA and are the parents of two – Merle, Jr. and Mark. Merle Jr. and wife Mary are the parents of three – Ian 23, Emily 19 and Matthew 10. Mark and his wife Kim are the parents of three – Max 16, Weston 13 and Mariah 10.
