Matthew Giampietro

About This Inductee

Matt was a two-time District wrestling champion and one-time State qualifier while at Crestwood High School. The team won the District title three times (1976-1978) and the Wyoming Valley Conference championship in 1978. Matt started his coaching career at Crestwood (1980-1985) functioning as head coach during the 1984-1985 season. He then moved to Pittston Area as assistant coach of the varsity team. He started an elementary program in 1986 and ran it through the YMCA for one year and then brought it to Pittston Area. He started coaching the junior high as well (1986-1995). Matt became Pittston’s varsity assistant coach in 1996, becoming head coach in 1997, where he continues today. While coaching junior high, he was chosen 1994-1995 Junior High Coach of the Year. He was also chosen as Junior Varsity Coach of the Year in 1997 and Varsity Coach of the Year in 1998. In 1999-2000, Pittston’s varsity team placed in the top ten as a team at the AAA State Tournament. They have won five District titles and four W.V.C. titles. Matt has over 140 wins as head coach during his 10-year career at Pittston Area. In 2000, Matt was chosen by USA Wrestling in the State of PA as Contributor of the Year. He coached the PA Cadet National Team (Freestyle) for three years, winning the National title two years in a row. Matt started the Northeast Freestyle Greco-Roman Wrestling Club in 1989. In 2001, Matt started a wrestling camp open to all at Pittston area which runs one week in the summer months focusing on Folk Style Wrestling. Freestyle and Greco-Roman Wrestling are the International styles of wrestling, whereas Folk Style Wrestling is what elementary, junior high and high school students wrestle during the school season. Matt resides in Pittston Twp. with his wife Nadine. They are the parents of two daughters, Alicia and Tara and the grandparents of two, Jeffrey and Falin.
