Mara started her swimming career at the Catholic Youth Center. Mara graduated from Meyers High School in 1972, where she was a member of the swim team. As co-captain, she helped lead the team to the District II championship. She continued her swimming career at East Stroudsburg University; however, she is best known for her coaching abilities. She has been coaching the girl’s swimming and diving team at Bishop Hoban High School in Wilkes-Barre from 1979 to the present time. With one of the most accomplished coaching records in league competition, her 25-year win-loss record is 303-18-1, a .944 percentage. She has coached her teams to 14 league titles (1980, 1981, 1982, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1995, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2003). They have also won 19 P.I.A.A. District II titles (1981, 1982, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003). The teams have posted a total of 97 All-American performances and 151 total All-State performances. She also coached nine state champions during her career. Her teams had their best state finishes as runner-ups in 2002 and 2003. Mara and her husband, Alan, reside in Mountain Top with their son Christopher.
