Lou Palermo was a teacher, coach and ath-letic director for over 45 years. He starred for four years on both the Coughlin varsity baseball and basketball teams, and earned a baseball scholarship to St. Bonaventure University. Palermo began his teaching and coaching career at Swoyer§ville, where he worked from 1930 to 1945. While there he coached baseball, football and basketball. His baseball teams won 10 Luzerne County League championships and three Valley championships. He also won five football crowns. In 1946, he returned to Coughlin as a teacher, coach and athletic director. Palermo stayed there until he retired in 1972. He also refereed basketball and football for 25 years. In 1980, he was inducted into the Swoyersville Sports Hall of Fame.
