About This Inductee

Karel Zubris has been a fixture of Northeastern Pennsylvania amateur sports and ice skating communities for more than three decades. Karel is a graduate of Coughlin High School and a 2010 graduate of Luzerne County Community College with an Associate’s Degree in Journalism Science/Mass Communications, where she was a member of Sigma Delta Kappa. Karel is currently a figure skating instructor, at the Ice Rink at Coal Street in Wilkes-Barre and a founding member of the diamond City Figure Skating Club, where she served as public relations chair. In this capacity, she showcased and promoted the talents of club embers to local media outlets as well as national publications, most recently in the July 2012 issue of Skating Magazine. Prior to the opening of the new Coal Street facility, Karel was an instructor as the former Wilkes-Barre Ice-A-Rama and served as a judge for the Keystone State Games for several years. Through her figure skating affiliations, Karel presented Proclamations on behalf of the City of Wilkes-Barre to Olympic Gold Medalists Tara Lipinksi and Scott Hamilton. She also oversaw the first local figure skaters form the greater Wilkes-Barre area to perform at the Mohegan Sun Arena during the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins inaugural 1999-2000 season – a practice that is still in place today. Karel also participated and performed in the DVD fitness production of ICERCIZE: An On-Ice-Workout. She is a member of the Professional Skaters Association, the Ice Skating Institute and the United States Figure Skating Association. In addition to her ice skating accomplishments, Karel is very dedicated to her role as a community servant, chairing the public relations seats for the Wyoming Valley Veterans’ Day Parade Committee, the Cliff R. Lewis Foundation, and the Make A Difference Foundation. She is an Alumni member of Executive Leadership Wilkes-Barre and a member of the Greater Wilkes-Barre Women in Business – Greater Wilkes-Barre Chamber of Commerce. Karel is also employed at Entercom Communications as a reporter/producer for WILK News Radio. Karel is married to John Zubris and has a son Jason, 14. The Zubris family currently resides in Plains, PA.
