John “Smoggy” Mergo

John “Smoggy” Mergo graduated with a B.S. degree from East Stroudsburg Teachers College in 1931 and began coaching football, basketball, and track at Plymouth High School. Mergo produced a relay team that took first place in the one-mile Penn relays in 1932-33. While coaching PHS basketball Mergo’s teams recorded 331 wins vs. 98 losses. During 20 seasons his teams won 10 league championships and four District 2 titles. Mergo died in 1975.
