About This Inductee

As a junior at Bishop Hoban High School, John was voted MVP at the Bob McGrane Christmas Tournament and honorable mention on Wyoming Valley Conference 1973 Super Squad. He led the team in scoring as a junior and was selected second team All-Scholastic Wyoming Valley Conference. As captain of the Hoban 1973-1974 team, he was voted first team All-Scholastic by all four newspapers in Wyoming Valley, MVP 0f WVC, MVP of Warmland Christmas Tourney and led Hoban in scoring for the second year in a row with a 22-point average per game. John was selected to play for the East in the All-Star classic and voted Hoban’s MVP. He finished his varsity career with 811 points in two seasons. He was awarded a full four-year athletic scholastic to Kings College. After only five junior varsity games and averaging 25 points per game, John moved up to varsity level in mid-season as a freshman. He led the team in scoring in his junior and senior years, scoring over 400 points each season. His career high was 28 points per game. He was voted to the weekly honor roll by ECAC eight times as a senior and voted MVP of the homecoming game. He played at King’s College in the last year they were rated a Division II school, playing against teams such as St. Joe‘s, Seton Hall, Villanova, Temple, Holy Cross, etc. John has continued to be involved with basketball as an official, officiating high school PlAA and State games. He is also a member of the College Northeast Conference Division I staff and was recently hired to work in the Ivy and Patriot League Division I. John and his wife Ellen Marie Hopkins Leighton are the parents of Jaclyn Ellen.
